Snow hits Queenstown, closing alpine roads

Snow has fallen across the Queenstown lakes district this morning, prompting a warning for drivers to take extra care on the roads.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has warned drivers that last night's snow could freeze on the roads, making conditions treacherous.

Arrowtown and Dalefield are among the areas worst affected and crews are out clearing snow and gritting roads.

QLDC earlier asked drivers to consider delaying travel.

Crown Range Rd remains open but snow has fallen on the road and chains should be carried.

Lindis Pass is also open but a fresh road snowfall warning was issued for 26 hours 10am Tuesday until 12pm Wednesday.

Milford Rd (SH94) remains closed after large amounts of snow yesterday. NZTA advises the road will likely remain closed throughout Tuesday.

Haast Pass (SH6) has also closed due to snow. A road snowfall warning is in place until 6pm tonight, with 3-6cm of snow expected to settle on the road.

Further north, SH80 to Aoraki/Mt Cook closed at about 9.45am due to heavy snow. There is no detour available.

State Highway 8 between Twizel and Tekapo is also closed.

Arthur's Pass reopened shortly after 9.15am after closing yesterday evening.

Lewis Pass was closed earlier this morning but reopened at about 9am. Extra care is still advised due to snow and ice.
