Water source help sought

"Frustrated" Wanaka Springs Trust and Wanakafest Trust members are calling for help from Lakeside Dr landowners in their bid to find a suitable water source for their proposed $50,000 lakefront water feature.

The Springs Trust has been raising funds since 2007, when it first came up with the idea to create a permanent water feature to beautify an area of Roys Bay between the dinosaur playground and the Wanaka marina, from which people could take water sourced from springs along Lakeside Dr.

The Wanakafest Community Trust agreed to help fund the project with money raised during its Stonewood Homes house build in 2009.

Plans were agreed and consents granted, but the project ran into difficulties last year when a secure and constant source of water to feed the feature could not be found.

Brent Harridge, who has been leading the project on behalf of both trusts, said he was as "frustrated" as anyone with the delays.

The trusts are speaking to landowners along Lakeside Dr to try to find the best year-round, long-term supply of spring water.

"If there are any landowners along there who believe they can help us with this, we would love to hear from them."

Shortly after the water shortage was identified last year, Otago Regional Council environmental information and science director John Threlfall reported the Wanaka aquifer, monitored by a bore near Wanaka Wastebusters on Ballantyne Rd, was "in good shape", and its level "within the normal range".
