Three South Canterbury nursing students have made the cut.

Clare Lawson, Tara Meyer and Emily-Jane Clucas have each received a $3500 scholarship which will go towards their third-year studies for a bachelor of nursing degree.

Bernadette East Nursing Scholarships are given by the Bidwill Trust Hospital.

The scholarship was created in 2022 in memory of the late Bernadette East, who was a senior nurse at the hospital for 39 years.

Applicants had to have successfully completed two years of their studies towards their degree and either be a resident in South Canterbury or have completed their high school education in the area.

Bidwill general manager Tina Rogers said, "Bernadette had a passion for nursing, with a focus on quality and excellence".

"The scholarship is a fitting memorial for her many years of service and Bidwill is proud to continue her tradition of helping new nurses to excel."

Mrs Rogers said the scholarship awards followed the hospital’s recent donation of $2000 to the Kit McGuire Nursing Fund, which supported nurses in their third year of study and its $50,000 gold sponsorship of the Aorangi Park redevelopment.

"In each case, Bidwill has supported people and organisations that will give back to their community.

"It emphasises that we see our role as not just a private hospital business, but as a charitable organisation with a vision for the ongoing health and wellbeing of our community." — Allied Media
