The South Canterbury Indoor Bowls drawn pairs held on Saturday were won by Derek Cooper and John Dawson with four wins, 21 ends and 36 points on a countback from David Mealings and Helen Guthrie with four wins, 19.5 ends and 35 points.

Third with three wins were Lyn Brown and Alison Mackie with Patsy White and Kelvin Lockyer placed fourth with two wins and a draw.

At this event it was pleasing to have the Timaru association patron playing for the first time this season, and as usual he was his consistent self.

A small contingent of local bowlers is currently attending the national championships in Palmerston North. David Shand continued his strong form to be the best performed local player going through to the last eight in the masters singles. Carol Dawson made it through to the last 32 and Neville Gould was in the last 64.

At the time of writing, Allan Gibson has qualified with Lesley Richards from Mangatainoka as the sole South Canterbury qualifiers in the masters pairs. Events later in the programme are the triples section play on Wednesday, triples post section on Thursday and the fours section play on Friday and post section on Saturday. Excellent live stream coverage can be found on YouTube; mat-side broadcasting on post section days as well as coverage from the North v South academy and masters events.

• Members of the association have been busy over the last five weeks coaching students from Waimataitai School. It is hoped that a date during the next school holidays can be arranged for the students, teachers and parents to have a session at the Timaru association hall.

On Saturday the fast 4s pairs will be played which counts as a bonus incentive event. Next week the Clubs NZ men’s nationals are being held in Whanganui. On Saturday, June 20 the national masters fours zone qualifier will be played for the Alan Reid trophy. — David Mealings
