Assault alleged on firefighters in Kaitangata

A man will appear in court today following an alleged assault on firefighters in Kaitangata last night.

A crew from Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out about 9.30pm, following reports of a "smoke-filled house".

Kaitangata chief fire officer Kevin Sutton said while the crew were addressing the situation, two passers-by - apparently unconnected with the property or incident - allegedly launched an assault on four of the firefighters.

Mr Sutton would not give further details, but expressed his extreme disappointment with the situation.

"It's very disappointing that my guys as volunteers helping their community have experienced this unrelated incident and been put through unnecessary stress and trauma. It's been referred to Police, so we won't be saying any more at this stage."

He said the original call-out had been prompted by a blocked chimney, and was resolved without further incident.
