Balclutha to reduce waste with 'Second Hand Sunday'

About half a dozen people have registered for this weekend's "Second Hand Sunday'' initiative in Balclutha.

The initiative, run by the Clutha District Council, works similarly to a garage sale except "no money changes hands''.

Council waste minimisation officer Laura Gourley said those who wanted to take part just needed to register for the event and display the items they would to get rid of in case someone else wanted it.

Those taking part just had gather the items they wanted to give away and display them on a suitable site at their property boundary.

They also had a poster to display on their letter box.

"In previous years there has always been more people out looking than those that have registered. The chance of your unwanted items being taken off your hands is relatively high,'' Miss Gourley said.

Those who were keen to "find a treasure and collect items'' were reminded to collect items only from participating households.

The council said it was a great way to re-use items no longer wanted but were too good to get rid of.

"As the saying goes, one person's junk is another person's treasure.''

Miss Gourley said there were half a dozen properties registered.

Registration closed yesterday however if any Balclutha residents had planned on holding their own garage sales they should do so tomorrow to coincide with the Second Hand Sunday.

Miss Gourley said there will be a lot of people out looking for "second hand treasures''.
