Balclutha’s beloved Phoenix Singers are set to ignite the house at their 25th anniversary concert next week.

The mixed, amateur choir will perform at the Clutha District War Memorial and Community Centre Te Pou Ō Mata-Au (TPŌMA) on Saturday, November 29, from 7pm.

The community is invited to join for a nominal donation at the door.

About 23 choir members will celebrate a quarter-century of song with an eclectic programme blending old favourites and new tunes from jazz stylings to rock anthems.

Promised, additional highlights include guest appearances by country singer Coleen Hoskins, local singer-songwriter Bazza Brown, Gore choir the Local Vocals and a rare, live piano duet — one piano, four hands — featuring the Phoenix’s new conductor, Mr Osvaldo "Oz" Gudesblat.

"I am a music teacher for my work ... I do not like to blow my own trumpet," multi instrumentalist Mr Gudesblat said.

"My wife and I came from Buenos Aires Argentina in 2021, first to Kaka Pt, now here in town.

"We practise with the choir at seven o’clock on Monday nights at the South Otago Theatrical Society rooms."

The Phoenix Singers rose from the ashes of the all-female "Sweet Adelines" choir group 25 years ago.

Seeking renewal, they recruited a conductor and pianist.

The new four-part singing group opened its wings to men and women of all ages.

Membership has fluctuated, with one original male singer still performing alongside recent recruits.

The choir has enjoyed several conductors and three pianists, fostered a loyal audience usually treated to two concerts a-year, offering a diverse repertoire of popular classical, jazz, show tunes, movie themes, religious, secular and Christmas pieces.

This silver jubilee concert will be the first flight of the Phoenix at TPOMA’s 500-seat auditorium.
