A booklet describing the history of the Gore Bowling Club will delve not only into the success, but the stories of players past and present of one of New Zealand’s finest clubs.

Still Finding the Curve, published by the Gore Bowling Club, features the living history of an iconic Gore sports team.

The cover features Sheldon Bagrie-Howley, the crown jewel of the club, whose repeated successes regionally, nationally and overseas have catapulted him into the spotlight.

Life members, photos, celebrations and awards all are detailed within the publication, which organiser John Speden said was a celebration of not just the facts, but the people and love of the game.

“There’s a lot of expressions from people about what they've done. Reports of bowls and matches and all sorts of things.

“It’s really just covering the period. Instead of having a book of statistics, you know, Tom played Dick with this outcome, it’s more about what actually happened in the last 28 years,” he said.

The club had dramatically transformed over the past few decades and Mr Speden said that was a result of hard work from the Gore District Council and club members to get their greens to a national standard and really stand out throughout the bowls community.

Fifty copies of the book will be printed for the first run and reprints are on the cards.

Mr Speden said now the past had been solidified and celebrated, the club was looking forward to the future and planting more roots for bowls success moving forward.

“We're looking to the next [era]. We've done the dynamics behind the scenes, the hard work now will turn into a reality and we want to see membership get to 40, 50, 60 again.

“[We want to] get people to come here. We cater for all people,” he said.

Initiations on Thursdays were the best time to come and play, where the club will show newbies a competitive experience and teach them the right way to play but without the stress.

“People are in all sorts of different areas, there are tremendous skills in the club behind the scenes here,” he said.
