Car ends up on roadside after crash near Balclutha

Emergency services were called to the scene of a crash on State Highway 1 near Balclutha at 11.30am today.

Balclutha fire station officer Stacey Verheul said it was unclear how the accident happened, but it was believed to involve two vehicles, one of which had left the Milton Highway about 4km north of Balclutha, near Smaill Rd.

The driver of that vehicle, a silver Honda Civic saloon, walked from the car to a nearby ambulance after cutting equipment was used to remove the driver-side door.

A witness at the scene, who asked not to be named, said she believed the Honda and a passing truck had "clipped each other" before the car came to rest at the side of the road.

She said the driver was an "older lady", who appeared shocked but uninjured on exiting the vehicle.

As of 12.05pm, the woman had left the ambulance and was talking to police at the scene.

No road closures were in place, and traffic was moving normally.
