Christmas parade registration deadline extended

A lack of interest in the Balclutha Christmas parade has forced organisers to extend the registration deadline in a bid to draw more entries.

The ''Christmas Celebration'' will be held on December 7, and includes the Clutha Country Christmas Market, Can Cruise by the Big River Bikers and a Christmas parade followed by entertainment.

South Otago Festival Trust event co-ordinator Jean Proctor said only two groups had registered for this year's parade despite entries due to close this evening.

The deadline has been extended until 5pm next Friday.

The parade was first held last year, replacing the annual Christmas concert. Community groups, businesses, clubs, teams and individuals were encouraged to take part in the parade.

Mrs Proctor said entries could include decorated floats, individual costume decoration, team marching and activities.

From 10am to 2pm, stalls will line Clyde St as part of the Clutha Country Christmas Market.

The Big River Bikers will spend the morning travelling around the district collecting canned goods, which will be delivered to the Salvation Army's food bank.

The parade will begin at 1pm and travel down Clyde St. The parade and following entertainment will include fire eaters, balloon sculpture, face painting and a circus fun zone.

Mrs Proctor said everyone attending the event was encouraged to bring at least one item for the food bank.
