Clutha Valley playcentre to brief minister

Education Minister Chris Carter will have his hands full when he visits the Clutha Valley today.

Not only will he be officially opening the new Clutha Valley Primary School but he will meet Clutha Valley Playcentre officials to be briefed on their plans for a new facility next to the school.

The playcentre was embroiled in a debate with the Government and Ministry of Education officials over how much funding was guaranteed for the new early childhood education facility but those issues were resolved late last year when Mr Carter's office agreed to let the group have a Dunedin-based relocatable building while keeping its entire funding package intact to improve and upgrade that building.

Playcentre president Susie Roy said she and other playcentre officials would meet Mr Carter briefly during his visit to update him on their progress.

Although the group was still waiting for a formal letter from the ministry, confirming the new arrangement, Mrs Roy was comfortable the facility would be operating within the next few months.

Mr Carter is expected to inspect the proposed playcentre site. He will open the $4.3 million school at 1.30pm.
