Eleven crosses have been erected outside the Balclutha Memorial Hall to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Clutha District RSA president Glenda McNutt said it was special for Balclutha.

The crosses were put up at the memorial rose garden next to the community hall.

A display had also been put up at the Balclutha RSA with more information on the men from the Clutha district who died in the battle, she said.

The display was ''amazing'', Mrs McNutt said.

The crosses were decorated with hand-knitted woollen poppies made by residents of Holmdene Home For The Aged.

The crosses were put up on Sunday and will be taken down at the end of the week.
