The town of gold appropriately hosted a day for rural women yesterday.

Nearly 100 women from the province attended the "Days of Old, Days of Gold" event at Lawrence. The event officially marked World Rural Women's Day.

Organiser Margaret Healy said the day included demonstrations, a tour, musical entertainment, and a chance for rural women of all backgrounds to meet.

A handful of men were among the 96 people who attended the gathering at the Simpson Park complex.

Lawrence identity Jean Goodlet gave a gold-panning demonstration. singers Alison Crawford and Sharon Bazley, of Lawrence, entertained the crowd.

National Century Farms co-ordinator Kelly Aitken, of Lawrence, talked about the Century Farm awards, which are now approaching their fourth year. She also spoke about the heritage buildings of the town.

Associate Prof Richard Walters, of the University of Otago, spoke about the Lawrence Chinese camp and recent archaeological digs.

The day closed with tours of the town's heritage buildings.
