Driver charged over fatal Kuriwao crash

Police have released the name of a Riverton man killed in a head-on crash with a car carrying Singaporean tourists on State Highway 1 near Clinton on Tuesday afternoon.

He was Neville Westbrooke Squires (82).

Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore, of Balclutha, said initial inquiries into the crash indicated the driver of a Toyota RAV began to overtake a northbound truck, travelling into the path of an oncoming southbound car about 1.20pm on Tuesday.

A 26-year-old Singaporean man had been charged with dangerous driving causing death, he said.

The man appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear again today.

Snr Sgt Whitmore said the police investigation was continuing and further charges were likely.

The driver of the southbound car, in which Mr Squires was a front-seat passenger, remains in Dunedin Hospital. Three passengers in the Toyota RAV, who are all tourists from Singapore, also remain in Dunedin Hospital. No further details on the extent of their injuries was available last night.

Balclutha police are seeking to talk to the driver of the large truck that was being overtaken just before the crash. The truck is red with silver trim on the side, with a solid back and double doors. It was travelling north at the time of the crash.

Police are also appealing for information from motorists who were driving on State Highway 1 near Kuriwao, about 6km north of Clinton, before the crash, and who may have seen a gold Toyota RAV or the red and silver truck.
