An Invercargill man escaped major injury after crashing his car on State Highway 1 at Kaihiku yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called at 3.40pm after a car went out of control on the slippery road and rolled, before crashing over a fence about 14km south of Balclutha.

Senior Constable Blair Corlet, of Clinton, said it appeared the southbound Toyota Cavalier's bald tyres slid on the wet road as the driver navigated a corner.

The 21-year-old driver suffered a moderate gash to his right arm. Passing motorists stopped and gave the man first aid until St John arrived.

The car did not have a current registration or warrant of fitness, and the 21-year-old was suspended from driving, Snr Const Corlet said.
