Clydevale dairy farmer Harjinder Chander undertook his 24-hour, "No Boundaries, Just Blisters" ultra-gumboot challenge from 9am Saturday, aiming to raise about $5000 for essentials for his beloved Clutha Valley Cricket Club.
Chander completed 112 laps of the Balclutha Bridge, spanning the Clutha River, pausing only for two 45-minute naps during the near-freezing night.
The medium-pace bowler and seasoned ultra-runner said he felt his latest endeavour had gone successfully, despite being among the toughest he had completed.
Having so far notched up about half the fundraising target through a Givealittle page and other donations, he hoped word of his unusual feat might now persuade further donors to contribute to the cause.
"Despite only getting one tiny blister, this was probably the toughest challenge I’ve done," he said.
"It was brutal overnight, and one side of the bridge was exposed to the wind, the other sheltered, so you were always changing conditions.
"Thanks to so many supporters and friends I pushed through. I’m pretty pleased with 86km."
He thanked running friends Glen Sutton, of Dunedin, and Barjinder Singh, of Edendale.
"I’m Harjinder and he’s Barjinder, so we’re known as Harry and Barry," Chander joked.
Sport Clutha, the town’s Park Runners and a local cafe owner were among many other locals who had helped keep him going, he said.
"Heart & Soul Cafe owner Deb [Kinder] brought me a hot coffee then did a lap with me in her cafe gear. That gave me a real boost.
"That’s just how generous people are."
