Emergency services put on public display

The Cross Recreation Centre will become the hub of Clutha's emergency services for four hours tomorrow, with demonstrations and displays open to the public.

Balclutha St John operations team manager Stuart Holgate said the "expo" would give the community an opportunity to see all the emergency services throughout the district.

Demonstrations will be held at 11.30am and 12.30pm, before a demonstration by members of the Dunedin Armed Offenders Squad and dog handlers, at 1.30pm.

The Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade will perform hose-running demonstrations, old fire engines will be shown, along with fire-safety and rural fire displays.

Clutha Health First, Search and Rescue, St John Penguins and Cadets, Red Cross, Civil Defence, and Victim Support will have displays.

The day will end with a combined demonstration at 2.30pm, showing how emergency services respond to a vehicle crash. The Otago Rescue Helicopter will attend if it is available.
