Forestry fire near Milton under control

Fire crews have contained a blaze in a forestry block near Milton this morning.

At its height, up to four helicopters, two appliances and one tanker were called in to put out the fire in a block of established trees off Coal Gully Rd.

The radiata pines are owned by construction company Calder Stewart.

A spokesman for Fire and Emergency New Zealand said crews had stopped the 300m x 400m fire spreading to the west by about 8.30am.

Crews from as far away as Dunedin had been called in and expected the fire to be fully out by 1pm.

An ODT reporter at the scene said smoke could be seen from the forest about 9am, but fire was under control.

The weather was helping, with showers and light winds only.

There was no word as to the cause of the blaze, and police and a specialist rural fire investigator had been called in.

No structures had been damaged and no-one had been injured.
