The Clutha District Council should reinstate money for two key community roles, invest in a new recreation centre and leave Balclutha's birds alone, submitters to its draft long-term council community plan said yesterday.
Of the 182 submissions received for 10-year document, more than half focused on four issues - strong support for funding the roles of Clutha community co-ordinator and South Otago Museum curator, backing of a $1.2 million investment in the proposed Clutha Recreation Centre and strongly worded opposition towards plans to demolish the Naish Park bird aviary.
Few commented on plans to introduce recycling or spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on infrastructure upgrades around the district.
The curator funding issue attracted 35 submissions, all of which demanded the council reverse a proposal to wipe its contribution towards the salary of Gary Ross and a further nine backed calls to reinstate money to be used to employ a full-time community co-ordinator.
All but one of the 25 submissions that related to the proposed recreation centre backed the plan to build an indoor sports facility in central Balclutha.
The other major topic of interest was the proposal to demolish the bird aviary.
This attracted 24 submissions, all of which strongly opposed the idea.
