Balclutha taxi operator Nathan White was recognised with a Clutha District Council Community Award this year for his above-and-beyond contribution to the community.

At the award ceremony in TPŌMA, councillor Bruce Graham said Mr White had earned the respect of the community through his "genuine concern for older residents, his generous gift of time and his considerate and caring nature".

Cr Graham said Mr White had received five nominations.

Mr White, 30, said extras such as carrying customer’s groceries inside then changing a light bulb or shifting something awkward was a natural and agreeable bonus to earning his living.

"It’s that trust and rapport, I suppose," he said.

"I had a lady ring me one morning worried about something to do with her cellphone.

"I went over and it turned out to be an online scam for quite a bit of money, so we went down to the bank to see what could be done and I understand the money was recovered within a few days.

"She said she didn’t know who to call but then she thought, ‘I’ll ring Nathan the taxi’.

“That kind of stuff shows you must be doing not too bad a job."

Born and raised in the district, Mr White said helping others reflected the example set by his parents and acknowledged the support of his wife, Catherine.

Alongside running Nathan’s Taxi service since 2021, he is raising a 2-year-old, serves on his church parish council and finds time to appear in local theatrical productions.

Long-term goals involve the nearby family farm, but Mr White said he was in no hurry for changes.

"I just do things as well as I can and people are grateful for it, so you never go a day without feeling appreciated, which is cool," he said.
