The Bridge to Beach attracted record numbers yesterday, with more than 250 competitors contesting six events.

The competition began at the Clutha Rugby Club in Balclutha and finished in Kaka Point. It included several different races - a 21km half-marathon run, 8.5km run, 8.5km recreational walk, and 21.1km, 35km and family biking events.

Organiser Lisa Lyall said the event was growing each year, and was happy with the 267 entries.

''Kids that have been biking from Paretai are now biking from Balclutha. It's definitely more family-oriented.''

Participants came from across Otago, with some from Auckland, England, and the United States, she said.

The event began in 2010, and this year an 8.5km run was added to the growing number of categories.

Greg Hannah, of Mosgiel, defended his half-marathon title, his new time of 1hr 23min 24sec shaving more than three minutes off his previous mark of 1hr 26min 51sec.

Mr Hannah (45), a baker, said it was his second time in the Bridge to Beach half-marathon, and was pleased to beat his previous time.

Dunedin policewoman Mel Aitken won the women's half-marathon event for the second consecutive year, in a time of 1hr 23min 29sec.

The Bridge to Beach is an annual fundraiser for the Kaka Point Surf Life Saving Club.
