Knifeman prompts Milton school lockdowns

Milton went into lockdown yesterday as a police dog unit was sent to the town to deal to a man brandishing knives in the main street.

In a statement, police said they were informed of a man in possession of knives at an address in Milton and that his family were concerned about his wellbeing.

Further calls were made to the police when the 30-year-old was later seen walking along Union St in Milton with a knife in each hand.

A police dog unit was sent to the scene along with police from Balclutha and Milton.

As a precaution, staff and pupils of Tokomairiro High School, Milton Primary School and Milton Kindergarten were asked to remain indoors about 1pm as police attempted to apprehend the man.

The man was later taken into custody without incident at his home in Milton and will appear in court today.

Tokomairiro High School principal Glenis Sim said she got a bit of a fright when she was first informed of the incident and had to get all pupils inside.

''You put these procedures together but you never expect you're going to have to use them.''

It was a fairly major thing to do, she said.

The school ''went into action'' straight away.

A few pupils were scared but were calmed down by their form teachers, Mrs Sim said.

The school would investigate ways to notify parents of serious incidents in future.

Mrs Sim said she was not worried as she knew all the children were safe.

''You have to be ready for whatever might happen but the police wouldn't ask you to go into lockdown unless they had any concerns.''

Mrs Sim did not see or hear anything other than what the police had told her.

She was happy with the way police dealt with the situation.
