Dr Sijnja was nominated by several readers for his tireless service to the community, which began as a student in 1973, before a formal posting the following year.
The 79-year-old said he was "honoured and humbled" to receive the award.
"It’s been a lot of years, but remains a pleasure to this day, due mainly to the fact I get to work with nice people and lovely patients.
"I’m very grateful for the nomination."
Although tending to patients was usually a straightforward matter for Dr Sijnja, dressing this particular leg would be left in the skilled hands of wife Heather, he said.
"I enjoy roast lamb, prepared traditionally by my wife, Heather.
"I wouldn’t have the first idea how to cook it like she does, but I certainly look forward to sharing it with her and our son."
