Court date after Milton knife incident

A man who carried knives openly in the main street of Milton today, prompting lockdowns at the town's schools, will appear in court tomorrow.

Police were alerted about 12:30pm that the man was in possession of knives and his family had concerns for his well-being.

A short time later he was seen walking along Union St with a knife in each hand and further calls were made to the police.

As a precaution, two schools and a kindergarten were asked to keep their children inside.

Officers from Balclutha and Milton assisted, with a police dog unit.

The armed offenders squad were also called out; however, they were stood down before they arrived, a police spokeswoman said.

The man was taken into custody without incident at about 1.30pm and nobody was hurt during the incident.

The man will appear in court tomorrow in relation to the incident.
