Balclutha's first weekly market day went off with a "hiss and a roar", according to one stallholder.

The market day was held on Elizabeth St on Saturday.

Stall-holder Gus Robinson, his wife Josie and daughter Amelia travelled from Winton to take part as one of the first of eight small businesses to test out the market.

They sold their own home-prepared sauces and venison salami.

Mr Robinson said there was a good-sized  crowd despite  rain in the morning. Businesses reported  a good turnover.

"It’s gone off with a hiss and a roar," he said.

Mrs Robinson said she found out about the market day on Facebook and contacted the organiser, Michelle Jury. Mrs Jury said  a lot of  people  visited  during the day  and she looked forward to hosting the market day again next week.
