Two patients have been flown to Dunedin Hospital - one with critical injuries - after a crash in the Clutha district this afternoon.

The other patient had moderate injuries from the two-car crash.

The crash was near the intersection of Clutha Valley Rd and Awamangu Rd, Pukeawa, about 2.45pm.

Cutting gear was needed to extricate a person from a vehicle, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.

Helicopters were used to fly both patients to hospital, a St John spokeswoman said.
