It will not be long before the Clinton swimming pools are ready to reopen after an extensive replacement of the building's roof.

Clinton Community Pools chairwoman Lisa Anderson said the project was on schedule.

So far, the wooden roof purlins had been removed and replaced with metal ones.

Now all that remained to be installed as part of the $127,0000 project was the Clearlite material to create the new roof. Mrs Anderson expected the work to be completed ''in the next couple of weeks''.

The roof needed to be repaired, as it was leaking on to electrics in the pump shed and into changing rooms. The clear roofing also had become brittle and some of the wooden purlins had bowed and snapped.

''We looked at replacing the entire roof, as it was eventually going to become quite a health hazard.'' Mrs Anderson said the group aimed to fill the pools in October, in time for a November opening.

A $100,000 grant from the Trust Community Foundation helped propel the project.

The group also received funding from the Clinton Lions Club and the Z service station ''Good in the Hood'' scheme.

The group was also selling 50 tiles which will be installed in the swimming pool as an added fundraiser.

Mrs Anderson said she was excited and looked forward to the reopening.

There are two pools in the building which stands next to Clinton Primary School.

One is owned by the school and the other by the community group.

Both were maintained by the volunteer community group.

''The children at school enjoy watching [the builders work],'' she said.

''It's a great community.'' The pools were used extensively by the school, as well as being a popular destination during the summer.
