Pool upgrade brought forward

The upgrade of the Milton swimming pool changing sheds will be finished in time for the 2011-12 swimming season, the Clutha District Council assets committee has decided.

A report presented to the committee by construction company Calder Stewart estimated the cost of rebuilding to be about $380,000, which did not include the additional cost of a foundation.

A second report from consultants CPG, including provision for foundations, put the estimated cost at $684,280, which represented "quite a substantial increase in the budget" from the original $200,000 estimate, manager of district assets, Jules Witt, said.

The additional rate of $24-$30 per property meant it would need more than just a resolution to the council to get funding. It would need to go through public consultation, he said.

After considerable debate, the recommendation to defer the major rebuild for consideration as part of the 2012-22 long-term plan was amended.

Mr Witt told councillors there was money set aside in the 2011-12 budget to replace the pool's filtration system, and it made sense to "get the building designed and do the whole lot at once".

The committee had set aside $20,000 to make repairs to the present structure, and would install a heat pump to improve the temperature in the meantime.

A budget for the heat pump was raised from $43,000 to $90,000 plus GST, with an additional $20,000 for minor repairs to the changing room.

Planning of the changing rooms is to proceed, but subject to community consultation.
