Romahapa wins biggest arts grants for project

The Romahapa district received the most in the latest round of creative arts funding grants, with $4500 going towards two separate projects in the small rural settlement.

Its primary school has been given $2000 to stage a "Romahapa district watercolour week" with artist Norman Sinclair, while the Romahapa Women's Institute received $2500 to help send its group to this week's National Women's Institute competition in Wellington.

The money came from the Clutha District Council's creative communities scheme which helps fund activities that foster the arts.

The two other sizeable donations were $1300 for the South Otago Theatrical Society to bring director Hilary Norris to Balclutha to direct Shennanigan's Wake for the society's next theatre restaurant later this year, while the Lawrence 150th year celebration committee got $1000 to bring director-playwright Warwick Broadhead to the town in November to help prepare a script to be produced in 2011 for a show to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Gabriel's Gully.

Other grants included: Kaitangata Playcentre: $360 (to have an art show with theme of "Exploring Maori Patterns and Designs"; South Otago Youth Trust: $800 (to hold woodturning and pottery art classes); West Otago Pottery Club: $400 (day clay workshop with Otago Polytechnic tutor Neil Grant).

The scheme distributed $8360 and will meet on September 17 for the next round.
