The hills are alive with the sound of rustling hay as more than 40 scarecrows have invaded Tapanui.

A scarecrow competition is being run by Tapanui and West Otago (TWO) Promotions to raise money for the Cancer Society.

Event organiser Sue Brooke said there had been about 40 entries in the competition.

Each scarecrow had its own identity and style.

Some are displayed in the windows of businesses in town. Others have been put outside in places such as on park benches.

Mrs Brooke said she wanted people to pay attention to Tapanui and come and look at the bright displays.

It was something different, she said.

Mrs Brooke, a cancer survivor, thought it important to raise money for the Cancer Society, as everyone had been affected by cancer in their life, even if they had not been diagnosed with the disease themselves.

Either through a family member or friend, people usually knew someone who had the disease.

There were many sponsors for the scarecrow competition and plenty of spot prizes.

The scarecrows will be on display until Saturday, when the award ceremony will be held at the Town and Country Club in Tapanui.
