School buildings to be upgraded

Lawrence Area School is to get a significant building upgrade.

Consultation has begun on what the school community wants to see at the school, though no dollar figures or indications of a time frame have been finalised.

Lawrence Area School principal John Auld said several of the school buildings were more than 60 years old.

''Some buildings are aged and some are leaking.''

Last week, Ministry of Education case manager Lorraine Pearce visited to discuss what the school community wanted to see in the upgraded buildings.

Mr Auld said Ms Pearce was involved in the rebuild of Christchurch schools after the Canterbury earthquakes and was open-minded about what the upgrade might entail and what the school wanted.

Ministry of Education head of education and infrastructure services Jerome Sheppard said the ministry was investigating options, which, once developed, would be discussed with the school and then considered as part of a business case seeking funding approval.

He said no decisions had been made and the ministry was unable to give any time frames for the development.
