Two South Otago schools with a history spanning back to the mid-19th century will celebrate the occasion with a reunion.

Warepa School, which opened in 1858, celebrates its sesquicentennial this year, while the former Kaihiku School, which opened in 1864 and closed in 1944, will feature at the gathering to be held from October 31 to November 2.

Reunion secretary Michelle Horton said the reunion was for pupils, staff, committees and district supporters.

The event will start on October 31 with a gathering at the Warepa Hall from 7pm, although the main day will be Saturday, November 1, when registrations open at the Warepa School from noon.

An official welcome and cutting of the commemorative cake will be staged at 2pm and photographs will then be taken by a professional photographer from 2.30pm.

A meal for those attending will be held that evening at the South Otago Town and Country Club.

The next morning, at 11am, a special school assembly will be held at the Warepa Hall followed by a barbecue lunch to wind up the gathering.
