Police want to identify and locate a man who stuffed a "significant'' amount of clothes down his pants and took them from The Warehouse in Balclutha.

In a post on Facebook, police said the man was seen by a member of the public who alerted staff to his behaviour at the store on Thursday, August 24.

They were unable to locate the man; however, he later returned and began "shopping" again when he was approached by staff.

`"He dropped items he had in his hands, walked quickly towards the exit and approached the staff in a menacing and agitated manner,'' the post stated.

He was last seen leaving the shop and police were called; however, they failed to him.

He is described as about 178cm tall in his mid 30s and with a full beard.

"He is slightly dirty looking and wearing a grey cap.''

The man wore an olive green puffer jacket, grey pants and black sneakers with red writing on them. He was seen wearing a pink scarf and a back pack when he was first in the store but was not wearing them when he returned.

The man allegedly stole a selection of girls and boys clothing sizes 8-10.

If anyone recognised the man they were asked to contact Balclutha Police (03) 418-0203 or Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
