Strong support for CDC initiatives

Most people surveyed by the Clutha Youth Council back plans for a new recreation centre, support the introduction of recycling and say a proposal to upgrade Balclutha's main street is long overdue.

Council members surveyed other young people and members of their wider communities to gather its findings as part of its submission to the Clutha District Council's draft long-term council community plan.

Council chairwoman Vicki Philip said the survey revealed most people favoured recycling, but some had reservations about the cost of introducing a green waste collection.

More than 100 people were surveyed on the recycling questions and 82% of those polled liked the idea of having recycling drop-off points in the main towns; 70% said they or their family would use one.

There was also strong support (81%) for kerbside recycling; and 70% of people thought the extra $18 increase in rates was a fair amount to pay for that.

But fewer liked the green waste option, mainly because of the $174 price tag.

More than two-thirds liked a proposal to spend about $2 million upgrading Balclutha's main street.

The Youth Council's view was that this would attract people passing through to stop and spend money in the town, Ms Philip said.

The strongest support in its polling was for plans to build a new recreation centre in Balclutha.

Ms Philip said there was 91% support for the project.

"The district has been missing a venue of this type and we feel that as a community, the centre will benefit most people in some shape or form, as it has an endless possibility of uses."

The survey also revealed strong backing of having swimming pools in the various communities around Clutha, with 82% agreeing such facilities were important.

Of those polled, 74% favoured upgrading the Balclutha swimming pool, while 72% liked the idea of volunteers running the pools in Lawrence and Kaitangata, to help reduce the rates burdens in those two towns.
