Balclutha is to get another supermarket.
Rumours circulated in March that Balclutha would be getting a FreshChoice after property was sold in Clyde St.
At the time, Progressive Enterprises, which owns supermarket franchises Countdown, Super Value and Fresh Choice, neither confirmed nor denied the rumour when questioned by the Otago Daily Times.
In a statement, Progressive Enterprises general manager property Adrian Walker said it was ''really excited'' to confirm it would build a new FreshChoice in Balclutha.
''We identified this site in March and see it as a great opportunity to bring a FreshChoice to Balclutha.''
Mr Walker said there was process to go through before the company was able to confirm when the supermarket might be opening.
The 1500sq m store would have a butchery, delicatessen and bakery and employ up to 30 people.
Mr Walker said Progressive Enterprises was working through the resource consent application for the supermarket and a submission would be made in the coming months.
''When looking for new locations we take into consideration a number of factors, but ultimately our driver is to make sure that a new store is well placed to serve the community.''
FreshChoice supermarkets were franchised and a local owner-operator would be confirmed ''further down the track''.
It was understood the supermarket would open by Christmas next year.
