Kaka Point Surf Life Saving Club members carried the club's newly arrived double-hull catamaran-style canoe into the surf at Kaka Point on Tuesday.

The club members tested the canoe at Kaka Point on Tuesday.

The club raised about $12,000 for the new craft to replace the old boat they used for competition events.

Representatives from additional sponsors, the Otago Community Trust and Clutha Licensing Trust, were at the canoe's debut to see it in action.

Club captain Doug Henderson said that a ''special road trip'' had been made last week to collect the custom-designed canoe from Gisborne, in time for this weekend's Southern Regional surf competition in Christchurch.

Mr Henderson said they were ''pulverised'' by a big set of waves but were learning a lot in a short time.

The new canoe was easier to balance than its heavier predecessor.
