The inaugural Clutha Youth Council was sworn in on Monday in what Clutha Mayor Juno Hayes called ‘‘a historic and exciting day''.
Twelve young people - 10 who attended secondary schools and two workplace representatives - took centre stage at the council chambers for the formalities.
In his address, Mr Hayes said the youth council's opinions and recommendations would be respected and given due consideration by council.
‘‘Your willingness to accept membership on the youth council will be rewarding as you gain experience and confidence representing the youth voice.''
Mr Hayes said the council believed the youth council members would have the chance to learn and understand the ideas and principles of local government.
‘‘This mayoral chain that I proudly wear will be passed on in years to come; chances are that it may well grace your shoulders one day.''
After adopting its terms of reference, three councillors vying to chair the new group gave a three-minute speech on why they should be elected chairman.
A private vote was conducted among the youth members and Vicki Philip was elected.
The youth council's other workplace representative, Brendon Morrison, was elected deputy chairman.
The youth council will convene six times a year with its next meeting on April 14.
