Wellness events gearing up

Growing a moustache may be easy for most men, but it is shaping up to be one of the key activities of next month's Clutha community wellness programme.

A Clutha Country "Movember" team is being assembled to help raise money to fight the rising rate of prostate cancer among men.

Anyone wanting to register so they can start arranging donations and prepare their face for a month of hair can contact the Otago Southern Region Primary Health Organisation.

Scheme co-ordinator Irene Mosley said anyone not keen to grow a moustache could still support the concept by making a "No Show Mo" donation.

Another key event for the month will be a Plunket-run event - a Christmas market day - on Thursday, November 12.

The event, to be held at the Balclutha War Memorial Hall, will include women's health checks, a baby weigh-in clinic and more than 30 stalls with Christmas treats.

It will run from 10am to 3pm.

For men, a gathering to help them deal with changes in their life will also be held during the month.

A one-day seminar to deal with changes such as a new job, separation, a new baby and grief will be staged on Saturday, November 14 from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

Other events on the programme's schedule include the official opening of the new Naish Park 1km walking and cycling track, from 1pm; the St Marys School twilight fair, on Friday, November 20 from 5pm; and the South Otago A and P Show, on Saturday, November 28.
