Young actors take the stage with the show The Real Inspector Hound in Balclutha tomorrow.

Publicity officer Megan Robson said about 12 South Otago High School pupils were involved with the show, performed under the South Otago Theatrical Society banner.

The show, at the society's George St rooms, is described as a ''classic whodunnit comedy'' in which two theatre critics watching a country house murder mystery become caught up in the action.

The South Otago Theatrical Society production is entirely the work of the young people involved, who range in age from 14 to 18 years, although they drew on the experience and expertise of the society's older members.

Miss Robson said the group started preparing for the show in March.

''It's been a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun.''

The publicity role had been ''great'' and was a good way to learn new skills, she said.

Everything from painting and building the set to rigging and operating the lights had been done by the youngsters.

Society president Sarah Van Asperen said the youth-run show was a fantastic opportunity for the society's younger members to have a bigger role and more responsibility.

''This production is all about them, on and off the stage. They are learning about budgeting, ticketing, advertising, and production manager Kurtis Barlow is organising them all.''

Mrs Van Asperen encouraged the community to watch the production and support the new initiative for the society.

The play has evening performances from tomorrow until Saturday, and a matinee on Sunday.
