Arrest over car thefts

A 16-year-old Invercargill youth has been arrested after admitting involvement in the theft of two cars in Balclutha last weekend, police say.

After a white Subaru station wagon, stolen in Invercargill, crashed and was abandoned in Balclutha on Saturday, about 2.30am, three cars were stolen in Balclutha late on Sunday or early Monday, and police believed the crash and the crimes were linked, Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said.

Invercargill police had identified three further youths to question, he said.

A Toyota Starlet stolen from Newarp St was found abandoned and burned in Clinton.

The car stereo had been removed. A gold Nissan Regulus, stolen from Hospital Rd, was found crashed in Invercargill.

An orange Ford Falcon station wagon (ALK831), also stolen from Newarp St, remained unaccounted for.

Police believed at least four people were involved. The 16-year-old was being remanded in custody, Sgt Bull said.
