An experienced rural midwife and an expert in the field have been chosen as key clinical leads for separate independent reviews into the Southern District Health Board's primary maternity system of care.

Former Wairarapa DHB nursing and midwifery director Helen Pocknall and Northland-based midwife Sue Bree have been selected.

The first review, involving Ms Pocknall, will start next week.

It is a mid-point implementation review of the "Creating an Integrated Primary Maternity System of Care Across the Southern District " strategy.

In a statement about the review, the SDHB acknowledged the implementation of the maternity strategy had received a lot of negative media attention - particularly focusing on the transition of Lumsden from an inpatient service to a Child and Maternal Hub.

The SDHB said work would be undertaken by a team with expertise from the national consultancy firm EY, and would examine what has been delivered and whether expectations as set out in the strategy have been met.

Reviewers could not recommend changes to the nine original actions contained in the strategy.

However, they would consider the extent to which each action has been delivered to date, elements of the action that have not been delivered, what has been done well and what has not been done well, and would consider recommendations to ensure the "full delivery of the desired outcomes".

The strategy itself has been reviewed and is supported by the Ministry of Health.

The review is expected to take about a month.

A second independent case review, led by Ms Bree, will be undertaken in parallel to the first, looking at the circumstances that have led women to give birth outside of their planned places of birth.
