Space troopers and superheroes flew to Invercargill on Saturday in a hunt for a comic book.

Hundreds of children, geeks and comic lovers gathered at Invercargill City Library.

Co-organiser Leon Harnett said about 1000 comic books were distributed.

"There is no age limit. If someone turns up, they can get a comic. If they are dressed in a superhero costume or donate an item of food to the food bank they can get another."

Invercargill resident Paul Feaver took his three children to the event but he believed he was more into the comic books than they were.

"This is our fourth or fifth year ... but this year just the young one wanted to dress up. The other ones are a bit older.

"It is a fun event for them, while I get some free comic books."

His 5-year-old son Tate came dressed as a circus ringmaster and had fun choosing his two comics from a range including Archie, Avengers, Spiderman, Smurfs and Sonic.

Siblings Aidan, Ethan and Liam Murphy also dressed up, as Captain America, Spiderman and Ash from Pokemon, respectively.

The oldest boy loves comic books so much that he is drawing his own.

"I’ve made a few of them It is quite fun."
