Fashion show location decision this year: CEO

People of Gore will know by the end of the year if the town has retained its premier fashion show.

Organisers of the Peugeot Hokonui Fashion Design Awards met recently to hold a debriefing on this year's 20th anniversary amid concerns the event has become too big for the town.

More than 1500 people attended the 2008 show in the largest venue possible for such a show, prompting executive officer Heather Paterson to suggest the awards may have to move as they continue to grow.

But this week she was downplaying that possibility.

"Nothing concrete has been sorted out for next year. If we were to move, we would need to talk to a lot of people before we went anywhere else."

But pressure was coming all the time to relocate to a larger venue, possibly Invercargill's Stadium Southland.

Recently, one group had asked to buy an extra 80 tickets for next year's gala event. This alone possibly meant the event had grown too big for the town.

Mrs Paterson said organisers would be looking at the new Gore multisport complex as an venue option. The awards are held at the Gore Town and Country Club, normally capable of holding 1500 people, but far fewer for the awards, because of seating at tables.

A lot of work, consultation and planning would be needed before the committee confirmed any plans to move from the venue or town.

Mrs Paterson said the committee would evaluate all options before coming to a final decision. She expected that would be made before the end of the year. The awards are held in late July.
