Five killed on roads over Labour Weekend

The death of a man near Tuatapere on Sunday night contributed to a Labour Weekend holiday road toll which stood at five last night.

The Serious Crash Unit was investigating the Southland crash, which happened on  State Highway 99, south of Jenkins Rd, near Tuatapere.

Police believe the crash — in which a vehicle collided with a fence and left the road — happened  after midnight.Police were alerted at 6am.

Details of the dead man are yet to be released.

Motorcyclist Ethan Nathaniel Bishop (18), killed in a crash near Otorohanga, in the North Island on Friday, was the first death  on the roads over Labour Weekend.

On Saturday two people were killed on State Highway 1 at Oakleigh, south of Whangarei.

Also on Saturday, one person died in a three-car crash on Great South Rd in Auckland.

Over Labour Weekend last year, six people dies on the roads.
