A decision to carry on with this year's Hokonui Fashion Design Awards has been proved correct for executive producer Heather Paterson as entries have flooded in.

Mrs Paterson said putting the event on hold for this year had been discussed, but she was delighted the decision was made to carry on as more than 250 garments would be paraded on stage next weekend.

Mrs Paterson's husband, Wade, had stepped in as the main event organiser and there were about 15 people working behind the scenes to make sure the event was a success.

A recycled theme had been included, in the open and secondary school sections, this year.

Generally, there had been an increase in secondary school entries, which boded well for the future.

There was a limited choice of competitions of this nature for secondary school pupils and it was important to keep the Gore-based awards going and to keep it strong, Mrs Paterson said.

Secondary schools in the Wellington area were among those entering the competition.

Overall, this year's entries were exciting and displayed a good use of colour and fabric, she said.

Ticket sales for the July 25-26 event were going well. The Saturday night was almost sold out but there were tickets available for next Friday night's show.
