Lifting spirits through song

About 900 Invercargill school pupils came together yesterday to sing, connect and lift their spirits.

The Sing Thing brought school children from around the city to sing together with the James Hargest College Concert Band.

More than 150 elderly members of the community were invited from rest-homes.

Outreach Singing Trust organised the event.

Board member Sally Bodkin-Allen (pictured) said it was not a competition or a performance — it was all about singing together.

There was no rehearsal.

The group sang traditional songs such as My BonnieTūtira Mai Ngā Iwi and The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

"We know that singing makes us feel better.

"Singing with other people makes us feel good as well.

"So it really is about making people feel connected to their community, ... making them ... develop resilience, ... lifting their spirits and coming together."
