Supt Taylor, who has been a policeman for 33 years, is the national manager of the response and operations group at Police National Headquarters.
He served as Southland area commander, with stints as security liaison officer for several offshore sporting events, including the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Supt Taylor had extensive leadership experience in a wide range of policing portfolios, Commissioner Mike Bush said.
His experience in operations, investigations and management made him ideally suited to the position. Supt Taylor replaces Supt Gary Smith, whose deployment in London ends in 2015.
Supt Gary Knowles, the Canterbury district commander, will take up a role as police liaison officer in Bangkok, replacing Det Supt Brett Kane.
The New Zealand police officer liaison network helped develop professional relationships in support of New Zealand's law enforcement interests, facilitating strong information flows, with a particular emphasis on terrorism and organised crime, Mr Bush said.
''As such, these are prestigious positions which are highly sought-after within New Zealand Police. I was fortunate enough to serve as our police liaison officer in Bangkok, so I am keenly aware of what the role entails and how important it is to police and to New Zealand's role in the international community.
''I would like to congratulate Supt Knowles and Supt Taylor on their appointments and look forward to working with them in their new roles.''
