A rubbish truck has rolled in Southland this morning, critically injuring a man and closing State Highway 96 at Springhills.
A police spokeswoman said the truck rolled at the intersection of Chisholm Rd and State Highway 96 between Winton and Hedgehope.
Emergency services were called to the crash at 11.27am and an Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter was deployed from Taieri Airfield at 11.35am, she said.
Firefighters were working to free the man from the vehicle and the helicopter had arrived at the scene.
The highway is closed.
The New Zealand Transport Agency advised that eastbound traffic should turn left onto Norman Rd then turn right onto Forest Hill Crossing Rd, turn left onto SH6 and continue on till Wilsons Crossing Rd, then onto Tussock Creek-Grove Bush Rd back onto SH96.
Reverse for westbound traffic.
NZTA said this detour was suitable for heavy vehicles.
