Fire destroyed most of a house in Eastern Southland last night.
Fire Service spokesman Rewi Grace said crews from Gore and Mataura were called to a house fire in Albion St, Mataura, just before 10.30pm.
Two women were inside the house when the fire began but made it out uninjured, he said.
Fire alarms were in the house but had not been installed.
"They were still in their packets unfortunately.''
The fire "80% destroyed'' the single-storey home, which was not being treated as suspicious.
