Rescuers free child from rolled car

Emergency services have freed a child who was trapped under a vehicle that rolled between Riverton and Otautau at the weekend.

Emergency services could not confirm the exact details of the person who was trapped, but that person was initially reported to be seriously injured, and was flown to Southland Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter on Saturday.

A St John spokeswoman said three other people in the car received minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital, by ambulance.

Police confirmed they received a report at 10.47am on Saturday of a rolled car on Riverton-Otautau Rd, near Otautau, and were initially at the scene with St John and the fire service.

Firefighters from Otautau used airbags and chocks to lift the vehicle to rescue the child.

Four people were involved in the crash, including one child trapped under the car; it is understood the child may have received leg injuries.

The child was initially reported to have had serious injuries, that had since been downgraded. — Additional reporting: The New Zealand Herald
